This update significantly changes the skill system, allowing players to expend xp to purchase skills, instead of selecting a training focus. See the wiki pages for more details. Also adds new encounters and a ton of bug fixes, as always.
A new update will be coming soon, adding more combat and many other changes.
This release introduces a modified combat sequence and changes combat attacks to only have an impact on the character being attacked (rather than melee attacks potentially damaging the attacker's morale). There's also some modifications of weapons and the actions they permit. Future updates will continue to refine the system and add new options. The update also adds new options/events/storylines in the tavern.

At the moment, you can only attack ports which are hostile to you, only plunder them (no conquest yet) and combat units are slightly limited. All of these things will be rectified in forthcoming updates once I've established that the core gameplay is stable.
